The Ron Paul 2008 Presidential Campaign Finances: A Unique Perspective
by Dan Bachelder
10/20/2007
In late Q3, and all but a very short time in early Q4 2007, the Ron Paul 2008 campaign placed a “widget" on their web site showing a running total of funds raised and a rotating list of recent of donor names. A few people, including myself, were able to start harvesting this data for the purposes of graphing and analysis. To the best of my knowledge this is the first time this level of transparency has ever been applied to the finances of a political campaign.
As the creator of RonPaulGraphs.com, I am probably in a very small group of people who spend more time than anyone, other than those in the direct employ of the Ron Paul campaign, looking at the fundraising data. As such, I've had a few requests to provide some more of my personal perspective and analysis. Even though I haven't written very much since I left college over 8 years ago, I figured I'd give it a shot.
The Data
I collect the finance data from the same source used by the “widget" on the RonPaul2008.com website. This data source is a Web Service, which is a URL one can access and receive a set of name/value pairs such as, total raised, time of last update, total number of donors and a short list of recent donors (including name, city and state). Every two minutes my software requests these name value pairs and writes them to a file.
The Process
Every 4 minutes my software reads the data file, generates a number of html pages and graphs as PNG images, pushes them to a web server, and the new files are immediately available on RonPaulGraphs.com.
The Graphs
I am currently generating about 50 graphs. Some of these 50 are simply different styles, flat bar graph vs. 3d bar graph, for instance. There are probably about 40 unique graph types, including “total raised: this week vs. last week", “total raised for Q4", “average donation size", and many more. Here are some of my personal favorites:
This graph is interesting because it not only shows the increase in weekly donations, but also how each day of the week compares to its predecessors.
As I write this on 10/20 we're seeing the strongest week yet with 2 of the best days of the quarter and the third consecutive “record breaking days" for Monday, Thursday and Saturday. I'll get into more about why that is soon.
This graph shows the total donated over the quarter with some markers on important events, these events play an important part in the shape of these graphs, which is also something I'll get to shortly.
This graph show the last 7 days, including today in yellow, and the previous 7 days before that in black. This is one of several graphs that allow one to see at a glance the current fundraising trends by showing both day over day and week over week comparisons.
Most of these graphs have donor counterparts where the values tracked are the number of donors as opposed to the total dollars raised. Unfortunately, on the morning of 10/20 that number was removed from the Web Service and those graphs have been rendered basically useless for the foreseeable future. I am leaving them on the site for historic purposes and because I hope they will resume publishing that critical number.
Events
Certain events have a very sharp impact on the level of donation, let's examine a few now.
Fundraising Emails. When Ron Paul sends an email requesting donations to his mailing list, the people listen. Note in the graph above showing total donations for the quarter. On the night of 10/17 a fundraising email was sent and the slope of the total donations line immediately became much steeper, indicating a large increase in donations. This increased donation level was evident from the minute that email was sent and for at least the next 36 hours.
Now look at this graph:
October 20th is special for a couple reasons. For several days preceding Saturday the 20th there was an ongoing of discussion on Ron Paul community web sites such as DailyPaul.com and RonPaulForums.com about trying to get as many people as possible to donate at roughly the same time (1pm-2pm EST) in order to send a message to the campaign and the media that grassroots organization is both powerful and organized. A web site was created (http://www.ronpaulmoneybomb.com/) and a plan came together quickly and spread through the community overnight. For reasons I will get to momentarily, I believe the campaign was basically unaware of this effort. Up until 1pm EST the donations for the 20th were moving along at a leisurely Saturday pace, even a little slower than normal. At 1pm on the dot the total number began increasing at an amazing rate, in terms of the graph, the line went straight up! The hour netted about $30k for the Paul campaign and the community organized effort got a big gold star with a little asterisk next to it. The asterisk is due to the fact that at roughly 1:38pm EST the Paul campaign sent an email asking for more donations for a completely unrelated effort (covering advertising costs in a new radio campaign) which was sure to cause a spike in donations on its own. How much did this email impact the “moneybomb" effort? I have no clue, but it's obvious the effort was going to be successful on it's own, given the steepness of the graph. If you look at the large version of the October 20th graph you will see a clear drop in the graph slope at 2pm when the “moneybomb" was complete. Although not as steep a drop off as could have been expected without the campaign email to add to the torrent of donors. My conclusion from this day is 3 fold, 1) grassroots organization works, and if the idea is good and popular it works at an amazing speed and seems to come together almost without effort. 2) The campaign is unaware of these efforts and has no control over them as clearly there would have been great value in allowing the grassroots effort to play out and rest briefly before sending an email which is known to bring out donors. 3) The Ron Paul supporters are far from tapped out. In fact, each campaign email, especially those written by Dr. Paul himself, seem to bring a larger and larger response, even those sent on a lazy Saturday afternoon.
The Future
Stock analysis is often compared to a monkeys throwing darts.... Political analysis, especially this far from an election, is like giving the monkey a glass of scotch and a kick in the head. That said, I will now attempt to hit something of value with my concussed drunken monkey...
Ron Paul is going to raise a bunch of money. Not Obama or Clinton money but certainly “front runner" Republican money. His online total will easily reach $8 million and depending on exposure during the debates and up coming advertising campaigns they could blow by that number in December. How's that for wishy-washy?
The Ron Paul community will continue to be outstandingly spontaneous and generate donation and media spikes that will confuse and befuddle those who aren't neck deep in the community. There may even be some controversy about it. It's hard for many people to separate the organic efforts of the subculture(s) (if I may be so bold) that have sprung up around Ron Paul from the actual efforts of Ron Paul and his campaign staff. An example is the community driven ThisNovember5th.com web site. This is another “moneybomb" style effort (a la October 20th) that has the stated goal of “bring together 100,000 people to donate $100 each, creating a one day donation total of $10,000,000" . Ambitious? Probably. Out of reach? Maybe. Significant Impact? You better believe it. Have a look at this chart:
That is a chart showing the number of people who have subscribed at ThisNovember5th.com (indicating some level of commitment to this plan). As of 10/20 there are about 1,000 people a day signing up. Just for fun, let's say 300 people a day sign up for each of the remaining 16 days which would put the total at around 9,000. Now lets say each of those people only give an average of $50 (half of the stated goal) each, that's $450k in a single day. Almost as much as was raised in all of week 2 and more than was raised in week 1. This is a far cry from the intended goal (even though it could be, and very well might be, much, much higher) but it's still pretty darn impressive, ESPECIALLY because it's an event that was not planed with, cleared with, or discussed with the actual campaign. This is an entirely spontaneous and self organizing event. The most amazing part to me, is that it's not the first (October 20th) and it probably won't be the last (Veterans day?, Thanksgiving?, Christmas?, something else?).
This presidential campaign is in an amazing feedback loop of success, the message of the campaign is bringing in creative and enthusiastic people who do amazing things with the message, which in turn brings in more people with abundant energy and ideas. The yardstick for this success is the fundraising data which the Ron Paul campaign has left right out there on the table for us all to measure by.
More to Come?
There's a ton more to talk about... per capita donor distribution, trend projections, web traffic data, fundraising for efforts outside the campaign, meetup.com, intrade, and so much more. If this article is well received, I will continue to produce articles of this nature as the quarter rolls on.

Wow, what an awesome writeup...I also believe this Nov. 5 fundraiser is going to be awesome! Crazy to see how many people a day are signing up for it.
Ron Paul graphs is super awesome!!
Rock on!
I haven't signed up. But my hundred bucks is going to go out. How many more people are there like me?
I am far from tapped out. Might be by the end of the primary season. We'll see. Things are just starting to rock.
I'm trying to push the thisnovember5th campaign with my meetup group. Everyone else do likewise. I want RonPaulGraph.com to be sweet eyecandy that day.
Dan: RonPaulGraph.com is the JUICE that will drive these spontaneous fund raising drives and bring in a whole new generation of engaged citizens. The message resonants and the creativity of motivated patriots such as yourself is inspiring. Keep up the commentary. Is anyone at Slashdot.org, www.oreilly.com, or http://www.technation.com/ picking this up on their radar screen?
I love the graphs, too, and visit often. One bit of info that I think is missing (as far as I know) is that you're only showing web donations, unless the RPfP campaign tosses in personal donations (checks at events, or in the mail) into their database. Doubtful.
As we know, the goal is to raise $4m online by the end of the month, and $12m online by the end of the quarter. At the current rate, I think we'll fall short.
Yet we know that the past quarter we saw that web donations accounted for 70% of total donations. If your projected value of $2.2m for the month is only for people online, I'd say he could see $3.1+ million in actual donations total. That's a lot of dobnations missing from your graphs.
Also, your projections see to be based on the overall average given, and not on the current trend projection. If the first week of the month saw $50k days, and the second week saw $75k days, and the third week is getting $100k days, the graph should keep that projection going (or maybe a separate graph) based on the recent 7 day-average of donations, or a progression based on the particular day of the week from the previous same days of the week. This might show a better projection (more realistic) than just taking a daily average for the entire month, and multiplying it by the remaining days.hours.minutes as you're doing I think.
I'd also love to see a "What we need to raise TODAY still" variable. Take the total donations, subtract from the goal, divide by days remaining (round up to integer). Then show current daily contributions, subtract from that daily goal, and show that number. This gives people a better idea of what needs to be given on that day to keep up with the trend to meeting the goal.
Just my 2 fiat cents.
Good data, great analysis! I think it is great to hear the other candidates starting to mimic Ron Paul. He is planting the seeds for our future, and the money donated is one of the best investments that Americans can make. Worst case scenario, our current crop of politicians is forced to wake up and face the no longer ignorant American people; best case scenario, we win, a victory for every person in this country (and our children), as well as much of the rest of the world!
Who could have imagined that Guy Fawkes Day would have anything to with the US Presidential Campaign 2008? It might actually be a critical turn. The twists that the grassroots impart to this campaign never cease to amaze.
Make it happen!
Thank you - geeks/nerds aren't supposed to be able to write that clearly. It's all quite impressive and I pray you'll crank out a few more of these analyses. I was even able to explain some of it to my wife!
And it's immensely exciting to see the optimistic projections. Right on, RON PAUL!!
I hope the RonPaul2008.com servers can handled 10,000 donations in one day....
Maybe the Nov. 5th organizers should ask people to spread out the donations on that day.
Thank you, Dan, for implementing ronpaulgraphs.com, and for the cogent analysis. Please keep up the great work!
Great write up, great data, keep up the great work.
Yup, this site is greatness and yup I'll be giving my $100 on November 5th. And I ain't near tapped out yet either....
Keep it up. I know for a fact that everyone is checking out your site, even the folks at Ron Paul HQ.
very much well received!!!!
Great commentary... please keep them coming!
I realy enjoy your graphs and analysis. a.b. dada had some great suggestions also.
~Another numbers geek
@paul, roxi, johnny - thanks!
@david - I'm guessing the number who don't sign up will be mostly offset by the number that do but don't donate the full amount.... maybe
@thesilentcritic - thanks!
@anon1 - I don't know about those other sites.. but it's certainly seems to be making the rounds :)
@ab dada - I will make a note about the fact that these are online numbers only. thanks! I am still working on some better projection methodologies.. there will be more on that in the future... thanks for the total needed idea! I have added that to the stats box!
@Chesley - I think you are right! The other candidates are certainly picking up on some RP messaging and strategy, it's funny to watch them play catch up. The one thing they are missing is US!
@david - yup! I don't know if the messages of the campaign and that of guy fawkes quite match up, but some of the imagery is very compelling and I'm excited :)
@ndevors - thanks! I tried my best... more than a little rusty. but it looks like I'll have some practice if the response to this article is any indication!
@anon2 - I think the servers will hold.. RP has some great web dudes behind the wheel.. those guys seem to really know their stuff.
@grier,localyodel, anon3 - thanks!
@james - great! I really hope they find the graphs useful! thanks.
@Austin, anon4 - thanks!
phew! the response has been great! sorry if I don't get to your comment individually.. I'm trying to keep up :)
Although I am legally maxed out on contributing to the offical Ron Paul 2008 committee, I will contribute $100 on November 5th to some independent political committee advocting his election. The Granny Warriors and Operation New Hampshire are favorites of mine.
Great site. I've been a complete addict for longer than I care to admit.
I believe on Oct 17th at 11:15 EDT the RP campaign reached critical mass or in the current vernacular, passed a tipping point.
Previous to this tipping point RP had to speak indirectly to his supporters through the media to get a large spike in donations.
You can see the effect of this looking at the donations that came in after the last CNBC/MSNBC debate on Oct 9th. The average Tuesday donations doubled and then Wednesday was a record breaker as people logged on at work and donated. I estimate that the debate spiked donations by $147.5k. ($30k Tuesday after the debate plus $117.5k Wednesday) Compare that the donations for the last 45 minutes of Oct 17th, $6k (est.) and all of Oct 18th for a total of $157k.
RP supporters have now increased to the point where RP can now speak directly to them and have a larger impact on donations than speaking to them indirectly through the media.
When the debates move to the broadcast channels it will revert back to media appearances having a larger effect on donations than fundraising emails, but this will only be temporary.
Keep in mind that even though the broadcast channels have lost a significant market share, they still dwarf the cable channels.
I’ve always been an optimist but I don’t think I am overstating the case when I say,
We have passed the tipping point.
Please go to www.ronpaul2008.com and donate!

P.S.( I am far from tapped out but the FEC says I am and since they have all those guns, I guess they win. But my wife is also a big supporter so I will be going to the fundraiser tomorrow, in Orlando, in drag.)

One thing I noticed, when clicking on one of the graphs, the flash widget still supersedes it. Is there any way to give priority to each graph when maximizing it over the flash widget?
Suggestions:
Track metrics of internet involvement such as youtube subscribers & views, myspace and facebook participation;
metrics of print media mentions;
alexa statistics on website popularity.
Prediction: Your excellent work is going to be the basis of some fine political science papers and case studies. Back in the dark ages when I was in college (30 years ago) the big push in poli sci was to make it a real science with objectively defined measurements,testing and predictions; and I'm sure there has been progress in that direction. Comments from young supporters in that field?
taking a daily average for the entire month, and multiplying it by the remaining days.hours.minutes
does not show the trend of growth.
That trend, if continued, yields 18 to 26 million 4 the 1/4. I hear people are organizing million dollar days.
Incredible work!! You/we are at the very cutting edge of a new social/political/economic/spiritual revolution/change toward more and more openness, transparency, accountability and responsibility.
Please come on our show on RBN to discuss this incredible story: Mon-Wed-Friday 10-11 am EST 800-313-9443.
Peace and God Bless,
Fred Smart
Love your site; like francisco said I'd like to see some other Internet metrics tracked (Youtube subscribers & views; MySpace friends and Facebook, Google Trends, etc.)
I am not tapped out. I will be giving at least $100 on 11/5.

This write-up, and its accompanying graphs, is one of the most impressive and incisive posts I've ever read online.
Why do we need an MSM when material like this exists?
--FZappa
@george - thanks! checkout my chipin page for other places to donate: http://ronpaulgraphs.com/chipin.html
@tom - thanks! great analysis. I too hope the tipping point has been reached.
@Duane - thanks!
@craig - thanks! working on those data sources.
@Oli - should be fixed now. thanks!
@francisco - thanks! I think you give me too much credit :) I am working on adding more data sources all the time. hopefully I'll get to those you mentioned soon. I already have an alexa page.. look on the navigation at the top of the page on ronpaulgraphs.com.
@anon4 - I'm not calculating predictions that way, I'm using a least squares regression, but that may change soon.. I'm looking into new projection techniques.
@The Freedom Fellowship - thanks! I'm not familiar with RBN.. email me and we can talk!
@FZappa - wow, thanks! I don't think I'm personally read to replace the MSM yet :)
For some reason the alexa tab doesn't work on my Vista computer; in fact not only it doesn't open, but it prevents me from going to another site until I close then re-open IE. It's probably something I'm doing wrong as I am semi- computer illiterate.
May I suggest another variation on a.b. dada's wonderful theme: a running tally of what needs to be raised per hour to achieve the campaign's stated goal?
I think it would have the positive effect of making the numbers a little bit more digestible for some.
(I guess you could take it to its logical conclusion and get down to what needs to be raised per minute, or even second, but that might be taking it too far...)
Kudos on a useful and surprisingly addictive site!
I love the site!. I must vist 10+ times every day. Your blog is also great and I hope you will post many more like this. Did you know that you have more site traffic than fred08.com? LOL!
By the way, the alexa tab doesnt work on my XP box running ie 7.
I love this site, and I hope that the campaign site webmaster will add back the total donor feed ASAP!
Because of what the campaign said about being open with the data, I would guess that mail donations are being added in. I see spiking on WED or THURS, which might mean that mail donations are posted about the middle of the week. Before jumping to conclusions either way, please check with the campaign, so that wrong assumptions are not made in analysis. It would be nice to know for sure, so if you find out, please post it so everyone knows.
Perhaps it is time for the Campaign to have a homepage link to RonPaulGraph.com?
Ron Paul Graphs = Best Site Evar
This site is so incredibly encouraging! Keep it up!
@fransisco - yikes. that's a nasty sounding problem.. I do not have Vista or any windows computer immediately handy.. but I will try and wrangle one up so I can do some testing. thanks!
@aristotle - I will try that out and see how it looks. thanks!
@jackson - Hah, I didn't know that about fred08, awesome! I will try and look into the IE7 problem as I mentioned to fransisco. Thanks!
@anon5 - thanks! At this point no one knows for sure if the campaign is adding offline donations to this total or not. my working assumption has been not.
@anon6 - nah... I don't think they need to do that :) it's enough that they check it out from time to time!
@anon7 and daniel - thanks guys!
Please include the ThisNovember5th graph on your RonPaulGraphs page. I am really interested in watching this project progress.
Please keep up the great work!!!
@anon8 - that graph is available for placement on the home page, just click the "configure layout" box at the top of the page and you can put any graph anywhere with the drop down boxes that will appear. thank!
Okay, you convinced me to check out 5th of November (I'll probably donate more than $100). I was worried it was an attempt by the opposition to get people to stop donating in the meantime. After all, dollars given sooner are worth more!
While I'm here, can I suggest that the best way to remember when "its" does not need an apostrophe? If "his," "hers," "theirs," "ours" and "yours" don't need one in a similar sentence, "its" doesn't, either.
positive feedback :)
Thanks, Dan, for your dedication and hard work on this!
Dan,
I just wanted to let you know, as many other have, how much your wonderful work is appreciated. Not just appreciated, but I'm sure it is having a very large positive impact on Dr. Paul's donations. I especially love seeing the week-over-week stacked bar graph, and the incredible increase in weekly donations during october, as well as, of course the most-recent-14-day graphs as well.
Just an outstanding job that you've done!
